Workplace relations
The introduction of
the Fair Work Bill 2008 into Parliament
sees substantial change occurring in
Australian workplace relations.
Key changes
include:

A strong
safety net of 10 legislated National
Employment Standards for all
employees

Guaranteed, clear, comprehensive and
enforceable minimum protections for
both employees and employers
- The creation of a Modern Awards
system to streamline and simplify
thousands of awards
- The adjustment of minimum wages
and casual loadings by a specialist
Minimum Wages Panel within Fair Work
Australia (a new independent umpire
for workplace relations)
- A new requirement for agreements
to be bargained in good faith
- A simple and fair dismissal
system for small business
- A new set of industrial action
rules
- Protections for the low-paid
- Changes to encourage a balance
between work and family life
A successful
passage of the Fair Work Bill 2008
through Parliament will see it commence
on 1 July 2009. The National Employment
Standards, the new safety net of modern
awards, is said to commence on 1 January
2010.
