Workplace relations

The introduction of the Fair Work Bill 2008 into Parliament sees substantial change occurring in Australian workplace relations.

 Key changes include:

  • A strong safety net of 10 legislated National Employment Standards for all employees
  • Guaranteed, clear, comprehensive and enforceable minimum protections for both employees and employers
  • The creation of a Modern Awards system to streamline and simplify thousands of awards
  • The adjustment of minimum wages and casual loadings by a specialist Minimum Wages Panel within Fair Work Australia (a new independent umpire for workplace relations)
  • A new requirement for agreements to be bargained in good faith
  • A simple and fair dismissal system for small business
  • A new set of industrial action rules
  • Protections for the low-paid
  • Changes to encourage a balance between work and family life

A successful passage of the Fair Work Bill 2008 through Parliament will see it commence on 1 July 2009. The National Employment Standards, the new safety net of modern awards, is said to commence on 1 January 2010.
