A conundrum for employers and their advisors: the new employer sanctions legislation. Amendments to the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) recently came into operation. The amendments are designed to make employers criminally liable for hiring illegal workers in the country. This article discusses the amendments and their implications for employers.

Workplace relations
The introduction of the Fair Work Bill 2008 into Parliament sees substantial change occurring in Australian workplace relations.
Key changes include:
• A strong safety net of 10 legislated National Employment Standards for all employees
• A simple and fair dismissal system for small business
• Protections for the low-paid
• Changes to encourage a balance between work and family life
A successful passage of the Fair Work Bill 2008 through Parliament will see it commence on 1 July 2009.
